Day Two

Day Two. January 11. Acts 13:13-31 I love how Paul and Barnabas began. They began by doing what they did every week. They attended weekly synagogue. They sat and listened as the scrolls were read. They didn’t barge in and take over. They waited and sure enough, they were asked to speak. This reminds me of my favorite evangelism verse. I Peter 3:15 (NIV) says, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” Paul was prepared to speak when asked. He started his message with what was familiar to his listeners, reminding them of their history and of […] Read more »

Old Life, New Life

In reference to your former way of life, you are to rid yourselves of the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you are to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. —Ephesians 4:22-24 (NASB). Early summer is my favorite time of year. As soon as the temperature rises above seventy, I snatch up my sunglasses and head to the beach. I also love to watch the silver birch trees tickle each other in their groves and the peonies make their brief, but extravagant, entrance into the world. Still … here I am […] Read more »

Introduction and Day One

Introduction to Week One Acts 13-16:10 Welcome to our study. You might be scratching your head a bit. This is a study on the book of Galatians and yet here we are in Acts. If you’ve looked ahead, you’ve noticed, in fact, that the entire first week of this 3-week study is … not in Galatians. Ah, but it is about the people to whom Paul was writing, nonetheless. In order to understand Paul’s letter, we need to understand his relationship with the people of Galatia first. So let’s start there. Unlike the letters to the Corinthians or Ephesians, the letter written to the Galatians is not written to people based in one city like Corinth or Ephesus. Nope. Galatia is a region now located […] Read more »

If you make a plan and choose a place you are much more likely to DO this 21-day study. Have you chosen your time yet? Will you set the alarm 15 minutes early and do your quiet time study first thing? Will you put the kids on the bus and refuse to take the morning shower until you've done your quiet time? Will you wait for baby's naptime? Having a […] Read more »

The Perfect Fit—Finding Time for What Matters Most in a Busy Life

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.” —Matthew 13:44 NLT It’s not like I didn’t want to have a daily time of Bible reading. I did. It’s not like I thought praying on the run when I remembered it in emergencies was the best way to develop a rich prayer life. I didn’t. But how in the world was a busy mother of two children under the age of two supposed to find time for that? I didn’t even take time to shower some days. My husband was in the midst of intense PhD classwork and […] Read more »
