Musings

Do you ever feel beaten down by relationship troubles? Or a general sadness at the state of the world? Or too many dear ones in crisis at the same time? This was right where I found myself a few weeks ago. Then God gently called to my mind our Sweet Selah feather—chosen to remind us of God’s promise to cover us with His wings. From that picture, this poem came to life. I hope it blesses you today.

Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.
Psalm 57:1 (NIV)

Tiny bird-heart beating wildly
Tumbling in the roaring storm
Flight erratic, wings a-tremble
Searching for the safe and warm

Still and silent, great and mighty
Father watches frightened flight
Poised to rescue, eye unwavering
Keeping fledgling in His sight

Extra push with feathers trembling
Aching wings and shaking chest
Fledgling flutters toward the Father
Safety beckons ‘neath His breast

Loving wings, majestic, mighty
Lift and circle round her frame
Enclosed, surrounded, warmed, protected
Nestled close He breathes her name

Battle-weary, worn and frightened
Turning toward the nest I fly
Spread Your wings and feathers o’er me
While I rest awhile and cry

Hold me close and still my trembling
Comfort me, restore my sight
Then gird me with fresh courage, boldness
To soar again in willing flight.

You are loved,
Sharon
