Musings

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
—Colossians 2:6-7 NIV

I am truly “overflowing with thankfulness.” I recently had a wonderful 90th birthday party! All four of our children and their spouses joined us, and what a joy it was to be together, sharing love, laughter, and lots of happy memories. I’m very grateful for all these years, for faith, and for family. It was so much fun that I have decided to celebrate again next year and have another 90th birthday!

Let’s look again at the verse above in Colossians. We need to be rooted and built up in Him, keeping our faith strong and overflowing with thankfulness. Thanks and praise should be a big part of our lives, reflecting the love of God in a way that will draw other people to know Him.

Sometimes, “overflowing” can cause big problems. I remember going down to the basement one day and being surprised to see it was flooded. The floor was under several inches of water! At times, rivers overflow, or the ocean sends huge waves inland, causing devastating floods and destruction. We can also be overflowing with sadness. We pour out our hearts to the Lord, and He comforts us with His love, keeping our faith strong so that we can overflow with thankfulness.

May we all strive to overflow with the love of God in a way that will attract people to Him. Let’s look at this passage in Galatians: “… the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control”  (verses 5:22b-23a NASB). If we were overflowing with the fruit of the Spirit, this would grow us in our own spiritual walk, day by day—and help us draw others to God.

I know I fail in many of these—patience, kindness, and gentleness. (I could write a whole blog on that.) We all need the Lord to help and guide us. Remember, “The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down”  Psalm 145:14 (NIV). Let us be thankful to God for the way He wonderfully loves us and lifts us up. He hears us when we call and fills us again to overflowing.

“May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” —Romans 15:13
