October 29 – Revelation 5:1-8

Dear Lord God, we come before You in worship and praise, for You are the orchestrator of Your creation.  Be with us as we spend time with You, and guide us to what You want to show us.

Only One is worthy. That’s at the heart of our lesson today. The scroll that holds the events that are to happen before our world ends and the new Heaven and Earth take its place needs to be opened at just the right time. And Jesus, Lamb that was Slain, was found worthy of it. That’s as simple as I can make it, and that’s all I understand about it at this time. I suspect there are so many more layers to this event, and someday, we will understand it in its fulfillment. I am so glad the Lord chose the way of the cross. He agonized over it in the Garden of Gethsemane. It wasn’t an easy decision. The human part of Jesus wanted to turn from it. Yet the Son of Man/Son of God bowed to His Father’s will and died and rose again. So … He is Worthy, and He will someday open the scroll.

There’s an intriguing verse in this section that fascinates me. There are bowls of incense in Heaven, “which are the prayers of the saints.” What does that mean? I do not know. What I can infer, though, is that our prayers have high value in Heaven. When we come to the Lord in prayer … it matters supremely, and our prayers are held and treasured – like precious incense. This is the incentive to pray more and more, isn’t it? Oh, how thankful I am that the God of the Universe hears and values my prayers.

My verse: Revelation 5:8, “And when he took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.”

My response: Thank You, Lord, for this glimpse into Heaven and the value of our prayers. You hear us, You treasure what we say, and You answer. All glory and praise to You, Savior, Father, Lord of All.
