October 20 – Revelation 1:9-20

Dear Lord God, we come before You in worship and praise, for You are the orchestrator of Your creation.  Be with us as we spend time with You, and guide us to what You want to show us.

Can you imagine that specific Lord’s Day when John was worshiping God as was his custom? There he was, exiled to a rocky, barren island, still worshiping and adoring the One True God. And then the seismically unexpected happens. There’s a voice like a trumpet blast and a look at the Risen Lord Jesus in His glory that had John practically fainting at His feet. Now, I’ve had some amazing times with God in my own quiet times, but never like this one John describes. WOW.

But isn’t it cool that God came to John while John was attentive and listening and adoring Him? When we are faithful in our times with God, even if a lot of them feel “routine” and not particularly grandiose, we are still available to His Spirit, and as God chooses, He swoops on in and knocks us off our feet. I’m pretty sure that John didn’t wake up that dreary morning of his exile with any expectation of seeing Jesus face to face. But that’s what happened, and John was faithful to obey and record all that he was told.

It’s amazing that it was written down and saved, despite Nero’s attempts to destroy the Christians and their faith in Christ. We actually get to read about a real encounter with the Risen Jesus. So, as we study parts of Revelation, let’s do so with awe and wonder. Jesus came and spoke with John so that we would know key truths to help us in our own “patient endurance” (vs 9) as we wait for His return. Let’s listen closely.

My verse: Revelation 1:14, “His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire.”

My response: I can’t imagine John’s awe as he tried to comprehend what and Who he was seeing, Lord! You are the mighty One, living God, beautiful and awesome beyond what we can describe. Thank You for this glimpse into Your glory and majesty. I understand why John would fall at Your feet. Someday, Lord, so will I …

[10] I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet

How easy it would have been for John to be discouraged exiled on Patmos. Talk about matching a punishment to a personality. Had the rulers finally figured out that putting God’s preachers in jail only gave them a new audience? John not only knows what day it is but is actively worshipping God as is his way. It is here that Jesus speaks to him and gives him this important message. Amazing!
