October 15 – 1 John 5:1-12
Dear Lord God, we come before You in worship and praise, for You are the orchestrator of Your creation. Be with us as we spend time with You, and guide us to what You want to show us.
John continues to beat the drum for loving God and loving others. He adds a reminder to us in this chapter that loving someone means you want to bless them and please them. When we love God, our way of showing it to Him is by keeping His commandments. And, because God is love, His commandments are for our best good. When we keep them, we are more likely to thrive and have peace of mind and heart. John tells us that God’s commandments aren’t burdensome. Amen to that. Do you know what IS burdensome? Lying, cheating, stealing, coveting, hating your parents, refusing to rest, worshiping idols … All of that is terribly burdensome. One has to cover up and hide when one does wrong. One starts to live a divided life of pretense as one hides one’s sins. It’s so much better to do the right thing and live with integrity – being the same “you” inside and out. Let’s confess sin quickly, receive His forgiveness, and steer far away from it. His commandments truly are for our good. I am so thankful for that.
My verse: 1 John 5:11, “And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
My response: There it is. You, Lord Jesus, are the way, truth, and life. When we come to You, we are gifted with cleansing, forgiveness, fresh starts, and the incredible sure hope of eternal life with You in Heaven someday. Wow, and wow. Thank You, Lord!
