Today’s Musing is from Judy Wilson.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert. —Isaiah 43:19 ESV
I recently turned in my resignation at a job I loved. I loved the work, the people I worked for, and the people I worked with. God had provided the perfect job for this phase of my life, one that filled me and brought me great joy. I had been praying about this decision, and God made it clear that it was time to go. Knowing it was His plan for me made the decision easier, but the sadness remained. There was a hole not only in my week but also in my life.
As I walked through the days afterward, I read Psalm 27. In this psalm, David fears for his life. Surrounded by enemies who threaten to attack and devour him, He brings his emotions to God and finds strength in Him. He calls God his light, his salvation, his fortress, and the helper who holds him close. He concludes the psalm with these words:
Yet I am confident I will see the LORD’s goodness
While I am here in the land of the living.
Wait patiently for the LORD.
Be brave and courageous.
Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.
—Psalm 27:13-14 (NLT)
I picture David rising from his knees, feeling stronger, having spent this time in God’s presence. He had poured out his heart and reminded himself of who God is. I read the expectation in David’s words. He has walked with God long enough to know His character, and in that knowledge, he knows God can be trusted.
God prompted me to follow David’s example, and I shared my sadness and fears with the Lord. As I wrote down truths about God, He suddenly and unexpectedly brought to mind the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, I am doing a new thing.” Instantly, I knew the words were for me in this new phase of life. I began to see the “new things” God had already brought into my life in just a few short weeks—new relationships to pursue, a new opportunity to serve Him, and a ministry that challenges me to grow in an area where I am weak. As His Word so often does, I was encouraged and strengthened as I became aware of the new work He had already begun in my life!
What about you? Are you experiencing loss and disappointment—and the grief associated with it? Have you lost a relationship that was precious to you? Has your home changed from a full to an empty nest? Are you or a loved one in poor or declining health? Have you lost a child or the dream of having one?
I wonder. Have you poured out your heart to God? Healing comes when we release our emotions to the One who created us and knows us best. Do you struggle to find the words to say? The Psalms are full of lamenting, the act of expressing grief. When words escape us, praying the psalms can help us find our words.
Then, will you ask God what new thing He has for you in this season of your life? Will you ask Him to open your eyes to see what He is accomplishing, to open your hands to receive it, and to open your will to His good plan?
Remember these words from the Book of Lamentations:
The faithful love of the LORD never ends!
His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
His mercies begin afresh each morning.
—Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT
With the rising of the sun come these good gifts from God. They are ours to carry throughout the day, and He promises to send them to us again tomorrow! He is our constant companion, who never, ever leaves us. With Him comes all of who He is and all the promises of His Word to those who follow Him.
Father, thank You for coming to this earth not only to be my salvation but also to experience what I experience here. You lost close friendships. Your Father turned away from You as You hung on the cross, carrying my sin upon Yourself. You lost Your life to save mine. You grieved. You cried out in anguish. You begged for another way to fulfill God’s purposes. Today, I bring to You my losses and the emotions that You understand. Comfort me. Let me feel Your presence. What new thing do You have waiting for me in this season? Open my eyes to see it. Open my hands to receive it. Open my will to Your plans for me, for they are good and perfect and come with Your constant presence. Thank You.
