March 10 –  1 Samuel 17:1-30

Request: Lord, I admit my human understanding controls my thoughts and thinking at times.  I want to be more aware of your divine intervention in my circumstances. Please help me.

Read: 1 Samuel 17:1-30; these 30 verses set the stage.

Record: Record a key verse and then write what stands out to you about David.

Respond: Write a prayer responding to God about the verse you just read.  Let’s not just pick a verse and move on.  Let’s interact with God about it.

Question to Ponder: How much are you engaged in your current circumstance?  Are you trying to figure it out, or are you avoiding it, hoping it will disappear?

My Ponder:

I love how quick David was to engage with the circumstance.  He wanted to be involved.  He didn’t care what others thought about him and his age and maturity, nor was he distracted by the size and bullying of Goliath.  There are times I want to distract myself from the giant/problem I’m facing.  It feels so impossible, so I go and do things that are possible and make me feel accomplished. Help me, Lord, to face the problem.  I need to seek you and your guidance.

My Verse: 1 Samuel 17:29-30, “And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.”

My Response: Lord, I want to be like David. He just dove right in when the circumstance presented itself.  He didn’t hide or try to ignore it.  He faced it head on.  Help me to be like David and to have the courage to look past the giant I am facing.

My verse: 1 Samuel 17:4 “Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was over nine feet tall!”

My response: I had to just pause here to remember exactly who David was up against – a man who towered above everyone, trained in war, and aggressive. He really was scary. Dear Father, I’m glad he was so impossibly big and strong, because it shows me that no matter what I face … You are able to help me. Size and strength doesn’t matter. Being on Your side means I’m safe. No one is bigger or stronger than You – Creator of everything else – including Goliath!

My ponder: My impossible situation is my schedule and the way I face it is to create a weekly to do list … start with the most urgent and then moving to the rest. And speaking of rest … putting in MORE time for rest and prayer the busier I am. Amazingly, this works. It keeps me calm and keeps me holding God’s good Big Strong hand. So my biggest prayer in times of hectic schedules is “keep me close to You.” Also, remembering that God’s in control and if I can’t get to something? The world will still turn and I’ll still be loved. ❤️
