And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God. —John 17:3a ESV
Flying is so not my thing! It took two dear friends many years ago to get me into a way-oversized tin can blasted high into the sky! Since then I’ve done a fair bit of flying. To the casual eye I look just fine. To the trained eye it’s obvious that I’m out of my comfort zone. On one such hurl across the “friendly” skies, that weren’t so friendly that particular day, I was even less at ease than usual. Sometimes one can wonder how the captain flying the plane might be … the last flight at the end of a really long shift? A little “under the weather”? A newbie? Or is he long in the experience?
As the plane lifted off, a cheery voice came over the loudspeaker with the usual passenger flight instructions. This particular day they chose to also announce the names of the captain and the first officer. The captain turned out to be a friend from church. All of a sudden, all was safe and well … I know the pilot!
It makes a difference when we know the one flying the plane. Or driving the car. Or … steering our lives. When I know beyond a doubt that God is behind every aspect of my life, easy or turbulent, I am safe and well in His care. I’m not promised a trouble-free life here. In fact, it’s very much the opposite. I’m assured that no matter how safe I am, I’m not going to make it out of this life alive, not in this body anyway. I also know that no matter how unsafe I may feel in this world, my Savior will never leave me.
I am promised that saving faith in Jesus Christ will safely usher me out of this life into life eternal with Him. In the meantime, that eternal life begins right here and right now as I now have Christ to lean on and trust with the navigation of my life here on earth. Oh, what peace and comfort! I can relax and enjoy the journey—because I know The Pilot.
Knowing The Pilot is the beginning of finding real rest and quietness of our souls. In this new week with a whole lot of unknowns all around us, who’s in the driver’s seat of your life? Do you know The Pilot? Does He have control? Free and full reign in your life? That’s my prayer to God for you.
Thank You, God, for providing a remedy for our sin, for Your gift of forgiveness and eternal life with You. It’s a new day! I love You, Lord!

Thank you so much! Yes what a joy!
This was encouraging for me this morning, Donna. Thank you for reminding me that God is always at the helm, even if I can’t see Him working I. The moment of fear, He got me!
Thank you so much Marlene. It’s a lesson I’m finding I have to keep relearning and reremembering!
