December 13. Day Seventeen

Advent

December 13 – Habakkuk 3:1-19

Joy. The little book of Habakkuk is a favorite of mine. Habakkuk has questions. God seems to be letting the bad guys win, and he just doesn’t get it. Instead of running away from God in a fit of pique at God’s choices, Habakkuk runs toward Him with his anger, sorrow and frustrations. And then he waits for answers. He doesn’t stomp away because God doesn’t answer immediately. Habakkuk has helped me in my times of questioning. He’s my go-to example.

The search reaches a beautiful crescendo and ending in the passage we read this morning. God answered. He told Habakkuk that the day would indeed come when God would restore justice and righteousness. There would be punishment for the wicked. Just not yet. And so, Habakkuk believed and quieted his heart, trusting in God’s timing. His bold proclamation that even though he saw nothing to indicate that God was at work, still he would believe and trust. His joy would come from God Himself, his Savior, and not from circumstances. Powerful words we all need to heed, right?

My verse: Habakkuk 3:4 “His coming is as brilliant as the sunrise. Rays of light flash from his hands, where his awesome power is hidden.”

My response: The yearning is now for Your return, Lord Jesus! Someday You will part the clouds and come down, gathering Your people in, and bringing destruction on the cruel and remorseless who refuse Your grace. What a wonderful yet terrifying day that will be. The ushering in of a new heaven and new earth, where every tear will finally be wiped from our eyes. We wait, Oh Lord, for You!

5 Minute Selah Moment – Read out loud Habakkuk 3:17-19. Then, talk to God about your personal “even though’s.” Even though You didn’t heal … Even though my dear one is still a prodigal … Even though … I will trust in You.
