October 25 – Revelation 3:1-6

Dear Lord God, we come before You in worship and praise, for You are the orchestrator of Your creation.  Be with us as we spend time with You, and guide us to what You want to show us.

Hoo boy. The Church in Sardis is flailing and on life support. They are almost dead, says Jesus to John. And yet He still speaks to them, urging them to repent and turn to Him once more. I love how our God does not give up on us! Time and again in the Old Testament and now here in the New Testament, God reaches out to rebellious people and pleads with them, warns them, yearns for them to turn back and be His once more. Let’s remember that those we feel are “lost causes” to Christianity might still have a little bit of life left in them, and let’s pray for God to fan that flame once more, bringing them back to Himself.

Jesus rejoices that there are still some in this wayward, failing church “who have not soiled their clothes with evil” (vs 4). He celebrates their faithfulness and calls them His. Oh, how beautiful it is to know we are His sheep if we’ve repented and turned to Him, and no one can take us out of His hands (John 10). It’s such an amazing thing to belong to the Lord, fully His child, knowing that we can never be pulled from His care. Let’s rejoice in that sweetness today.

My verse: Revelation 3:3, “Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly. Repent and turn to me again. If you don’t wake up, I will come to you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief.”

My response: I am seeing the repeated refrain of holding on again, Lord. Yesterday, it was to hold tightly to what I have, and today, it is to hold on firmly. Help me to stay close – my little hand gripped in Your Big Hand – until the day You take me home.

[5] The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

So many truths in these few verses. I am in awe that Jesus would speak my name to the Father. I who am so unworthy have been made worthy by the only one who can. Lord, help me to turn to you for everything trusting in you always.

There’s something so personal about that, isn’t there? My name. Spoken by the Father. And your name. He sees us, Cheri! Every single one of us. We are so blessed to be His!
