Dear Lord God, we come before You in worship and praise, for You are the orchestrator of Your creation.  Be with us as we spend time with You, and guide us to what You want to show us.

In this story, we see Jesus’ huge compassion and power on display. His compassion was great. When Jairus pleaded for help, Jesus left the welcoming crowds to go and heal his daughter. When the woman who was bleeding touched Him, he stopped and ministered to her, even though Jairus’ need was urgent. I am so amazed that He was able to switch focus that quickly and deal with the need at hand. Then off He went to raise a little girl from the dead. What power!

This was early in His ministry, and He did not want people to know the full extent of His power yet – He had more teaching to do before His power was more fully unveiled as it was at Lazarus’ grave. But guess who He wanted to see this first raising of the dead? Those fishermen that dropped their nets and followed Him. John saw a dead girl breathe again. He was trusted early in Jesus’ ministry to see just how powerful the Son of God was. Even death was no barrier to Him! How do you think this shaped young John and solidified his faith? Luke records no words that John might have spoken. But John was there and invited into an amazing, supernatural, miraculous event.

My verse: “Daughter,’ he said, ‘your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” Luke 8:48

My response: I love how You called her “daughter”! Lord Jesus, You loved people so very well. You had just a few moments with this woman, and yet You sent her on her way with Your peace and the intimacy of being called a daughter. Thank You for noticing her, Lord, and giving her dignity and love as well as healing. I’m so glad I, too, am Your daughter. In Your Name, Amen.

  • And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. Luke 8:51
I am struck by how close these three disciples were to Jesus already. They were there front and center to witness all this transpire. Lord, I do not pray for importance in your kingdom but I long to be closer to you each day. Help me to recognize where you are working.
