June 3. Exodus 15:1-21
Imagine being part of a huge crowd of people. You’ve just all run away from a despotic government and are headed to freedom somewhere, anywhere else but from where you just came. And then that tyrannical government sends its soldiers after all of you. You see them coming, but in front of you is an impassable sea. You have children with you. Infants. Animals. All your worldly goods. You are sunk.
However, if you are an Israelite and this is the time of Moses, you are not sunk at all. Instead, God parts a huge expanse of water and ushers tens of thousands of you across on dry land while the water Stands. Straight. Up. And guess who gets the sinking treatment? The army chasing you. This is a stunning story. No wonder there are songs written about this incredible rescue. Only the hand of God could deliver them! And He did. It was a marvel that no one who saw it would ever forget. It was so amazing that it lasted in history and we are still talking about it to this day. And in today’s reading, we’re caught up in the wonder of it as we read what those who witnessed the miracle sang. Wow.
Let’s not forget that the same God who did this mighty thing for the Israelites is our God. He is still able to part the seas of difficulty for us in impossible, improbable ways. We can rest in knowing we serve a mighty God who rescues His people! We can learn from this song that is really a prayer, too. When God helps us, our response should be thanksgiving and praise! Let’s not be like the nine lepers Jesus healed who just accepted the healing and left. One leper in that New Testament story came back and fell at His feet to thank Him. Lord, teach us to praise and thank and linger over a rescue, please!
My verse: Exodus 15:11 “Who is like you among the gods, O LORD – glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders?”
My response: Their amazement at what they’ve just seen is so evident, Lord, as they celebrate what You did: “At the blast of your breath the waters piled up!” (v.8) … “But you blew your breath and the sea covered them” (v.10) … “You raised your right hand, and the earth swallowed our enemies” (v. 12). I love that these descriptions basically are saying, And it wasn’t even hard for You!! No breaking out in a sweat or straining Your muscles. You barely moved, but by Your command and by Your breath it was accomplished. You are so mighty, Lord God and so worthy of our praise and awe!

My verse is Exodus 15:19 NLT
When Pharoah’s horses, chariots, and charioteers rushed into the
sea, the Lord brought the water crashing down on them.
But the people of Israel had walked through the middle
of the sea on dry ground!
Once again, I see how our Father watches over and protects His
children. But He brings destruction to those who do not follow
Him and want to cause harm to those who do love
Him and follow His ways.
Thank you, Father for your ever present care and protection.

Candie, isn’t it amazing that the ground was DRY? Not even a puddle left. God thoroughly and completely took care of them. No wonder they sang and danced!!
Sharon, I can’t even imagine what it must have been like to see the sea parted and to actually be able to walk through it on dry ground. How awesome and amazing is our God!! May we always sing His praises!
