Seeking Jesus Day Eighteen – Mark 9:30-50

I’d like to examine Mark 9:30-31a for a moment. Let’s read it:  “Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there, for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them …” Have you noticed the repeated refrain of Jesus wanting to spend time alone and/or alone with His disciples? We teach “selah” times here at Sweet Selah Ministries. Jesus knew the value of quiet teaching times soaking in the presence of God. This time, I think He was actually blessed with the quiet “selah time” He sought. At least, Mark does not immediately announce a crowd showing up! He modeled such grace and compassion when His alone times were interrupted, as should we, but He never stopped seeking them. That should also be us!!

Jesus also showed a deep love for children in this section. His anger at those who would in any way prevent a child from knowing Him was fierce and protective. Tossing someone into the sea with a millstone around his neck would not be pleasant. And it would most definitely be fatal. Jesus loves the little children. And I am so glad He does!

Last of all, I noted again Jesus’ passion to serve and to call others to serve as well in verse 35: “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” This is a good question to ask ourselves regularly. Am I okay being in last place and the servant of everyone else? This is the kind of follower our Lord wants.

My recorded verse(s):

Mark 9:33a “After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house …”

Mark 9:35 “He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, ‘Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”

My response: You planned a retreat, Lord! Just You and Your special twelve disciples, so You could teach them and help them go deeper into giving and serving. I love retreats and it was fun to discover this one.
