Hear my cry, O God,
    listen to my prayer;

 from the end of the earth I call to you
    when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
    that is higher than I,
 for you have been my refuge,
    a strong tower against the enemy.
—Psalm 61:1-3 ESV

The sea is angry today. The ocean is a restless, churning, white-foamed cauldron. Waves form, rise high, and crash against the rocks with a roar. Water flies in jumbled white spray, flinging itself again and again and again against the cliffs.

I watch in awe at a respectful distance. That churning massive body of water endlessly crashing against rock would crush me were I close. Anything in its path would be hurled with a ruthless and killing force. It’s both magnificent and frightening.

And still it comes. An endless beating against rock and cliff. The waves climb high and hit hard—yet when the water falls back, the rock still stands. Immovable. Simply there. Apparently unimpressed with the fury of the storm. How many centuries have these rocks stood—tall and firm—with the sea endlessly beating against them?

I’m watching as I sit high on a rock cliff. Secure within a building atop one of those great rocks that has withstood centuries of pounding waves. I’m safe in my fortress. Stable, grounded, while the water churns in frenzy below. I trust the rock and the building to protect me as I watch from the safety of my perch.

You. You are my Rock. Nothing formed against You will ever stand. You simply are. All the forces of evil that rage and churn and throw themselves full force against you with spray splashing high, fall away again, leaving You untouched. Unchanged. Still the same.

And I am safe in You.

“Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.” I rest in You, mighty God. You who never change. You who can withstand. Thank You for being my Safe Place and my King. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

You are loved,
Sharon

      Oh Terri, I am glad the devotions resonate. You love those sweet alone times with God like I do, I know. The address is The Cliff House in York/Cape Neddick, Maine. It’s such a beautiful place to go for the day. I’m thankful they allow day visitors because I surely could not afford being an overnight one!!
