February 28. Revelation 22

February 28. Revelation 22 Well, our month long study ends today with the last chapter in the last book in the Bible. How fitting an ending that is! John ends as he begins, giving praise to Jesus and yearning for His return. He is fiercely adamant that not one word of what he shares should be changed. No tampering. Sadly, John had experience with false teachers and unholy people in his churches. He wanted to make sure that what Jesus told him is exactly what everyone would read. Nothing should be altered or changed. So, what we have because of this, is Jesus' actual revelation to His church. Wow. I love the description of Heaven, don't you? Can you imagine trees that have different crops […] Read more »

February 27. Revelation 1

SPECIAL NOTE: There was a mistake on the original list of readings. Tomorrow's reading for February 28 is Revelation 22. We are reading the first and last chapters of this book. So, make sure you read Revelation 22.   February 27. Revelation 1 I don't know where we get the idea that accepting Christ as Lord and Savior is going to make our lives cozy and comfy. If we look at the people of faith in the Bible, although their souls were at rest and peace in Jesus, their bodies often were asked to endure hard things and much suffering. John was the "disciple whom Jesus loved" and yet, in his old age, he was exiled to a rocky island with minimal comforts and maximum […] Read more »

February 26. 3 John

February 26. 3 John John pens another short little note that we have preserved for us as 3 John. And, in some translations, he names himself as "John the elder" both in this letter and 2 John as well. He's relaxed his former approach of never naming himself by this stage in his life, evidently. I thought he only named himself in Revelation. In any case, he's chatting to a "dear friend" and we see John's emphasis on both truth and love in the very first part of the letter: "I am writing to Gaius, my dear friend, whom I love in the truth." John loves well and John values truth highly. We should be like him in these twin ideals! John is thrilled that […] Read more »

What's Next

Well friend, This online study is almost over. One of the Big Goals of an online Bible Study is to get you SO excited about spending time daily with the Lord, that you never want to stop. So, what's next? Here are some suggestions for you and no, despite this picture, you do NOT necessarily need to buy one of Sharon's books! There are LOTS of great studies out there: Now that you know the 4 R method, any book of the Bible can be studied simply with the Bible, a journal and a pen. Perhaps you'd like to study the full book of John or the full book of Revelation? Or, maybe you'd like to try an Old Testament book. The book of Ruth […] Read more »

February 25. 2 John

February 25. 2 John This short little letter was perhaps written quickly because John had heard that his beloved churches were welcoming into their midst a group of people who were teaching that Jesus had not actually really come to earth as a human being. This would have horrified the disciple who had literally lived with Jesus day in and day out for three entire years. Can you imagine if someone joined your church and declared themselves to be a member and started stating boldly that actually, Jesus was an alien from the planet Mars??? NO. That is not who Jesus was and that is not what your church believes. We can't have people claiming to be Christians and then so directly denying the basic […] Read more »

February 24. 1 John 5:13-21

February 24. 1 John 5:13-21 We are finishing up John's first letter to the churches in his area today. It's clear he wants true believers to walk in the light and to love well. He has warned these believers against those who would pretend to be one of them, but who in reality have no desire to walk in loving obedience with Christ and who do not believe Jesus is true God and true man, Son of God, Messiah. John reassures us that those who received Christ genuinely can rest in that. I think verse 13 is such a comfort: "I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life." […] Read more »

February 23. 1 John 5:1-12

February 23. 1 John 5:1-12 John continues to be a "son of thunder" as well as "apostle of love" in this section. He thunders, in that he is adamant that we believe Jesus is the Christ and that love for God is shown by obedience to Him. He is crystal clear, isn't he? And he shows himself to also value love simply by the way it works itself into every conversation and theme! We are to love God and love others. These are, of course, the two greatest commandments. Jesus stated that for us in Matthew 22:37-39: " Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second […] Read more »

February 22. 1 John 4:7-21

February 22. 1 John 4:7-21 Oh I am so happy to get to this section of John's letter because it is my favorite! Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was a young mother living in Germany with two small girls ages 6 and 4, two dogs and a cat. Ray, their Daddy and my husband, was in Kuwait, preparing for the Persian Gulf War. I barely spoke German and was very frightened by all the warnings about terrorism against our American military enclave. Do you know what helped me most? 1 John 4:18. "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment." I memorized it in the old King James Version and that verse helped […] Read more »
