Well, look at YOU! You've finished our abbreviated Week One of this study. Well done! I've been collecting thoughts and notes on Jesus this first week. Hello dear ones! How is the study going for you? I hope that you are enjoying the comments here on this page, and that God is speaking to you personally and uniquely each day as you meet with Him. Today, let's talk for a bit about how Jesus pushed back on legalism and brought in a new way of doing life. You see, when we just follow the rules, we get trapped by them. We start measuring ourselves and our worth by how smart we are at being exactly perfect at rules-keeping. When we fail, which we inevitably do, we beat ourselves up and drown in shame at times. How are your readings going, friend? I hope every day is one of discovery as you seek to know Jesus better. Today, I was fascinated by how Jesus gave the gift of forgiveness of sins first and only after that, the gift of healing to the paralytic. In our earthly minds, it's almost a shock when He forgives the crippled man. We are waiting for the healing, but Jesus sees the deeper need and the greater gift. I also loved how He did not let the opinions of the crowd sway Him. He just went about His Father's business of teaching and healing and forgiving. Well. I'll tell you one thing that stands out to me in this second reading in Mark. Jesus was busy! He taught in the synagogues and healed the sick and cast out demons. He touched lepers with compassion. His days were full and the crowds were growing! No wonder Mark uses the word "amazed" a lot. What Jesus was doing was out of the ordinary. He was different from the other rabbis, whose typical style at the time was to teach by asking questions and mulling things over with their students. Nope. Jesus didn't mull. Hello dear fellow adventurer!  How was your reading time this morning? Were you able to read the passage uninterrupted? Or ... did you struggle with various and sundry family members' needs before you were actually able to find those ten minutes to sit and study the beginning of Mark? However hard it was or wasn't, I hope God met you as you sought Him in this dynamic little book! Did you notice that—unlike the other gospels—Mark ignores Jesus' birth and beginnings and starts instead with Jesus' public ministry? Mark's focus is clear.
